Professor Rolando Andrade

REDONDO BEACH - March 27, 2013 —Today’s speaker was Rolando Andrade, one of our own and the president-elect of our club for the 2014-15 Rotary Year.  A retired professor from Bowling Green University in Ohio, Andrade led a lively discussion focusing on discrimination, stereotypes and prejudice. More on that later.

PDG Chuck Anderson served as our greeter today, Nancy Campbell provided the invocation, and Bill Paul led us in the flag salute.

Special guests today were Pillar and Antonio Belon from Spain; they are the parents of our Rotary Club’s Exchange Student, Andrea Belon. Pillar, Andrea’s mom, is a lawyer in Spain.  She expressed heartfelt thanks to the club and host families for hosting their 16-year-old daughter during the current school year.  Andrea is a sophomore at Redondo Union High School where she recently performed in the school's spring play, Grease.  Her host families are James and Lori Jackman, Bill and Colette Paul, and Bruce and Lori Logan.  Andrea will return to Spain at the conclusion of the currently school year.

Another guest was Stephanie Scerra, daughter of Rotarian Steve Scerra. She announced she would son leave to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) in the Czech Republic.

President Nancy Campbell announced that Mark Smith proided Meals-on-Wheels today, and next week Bill Gard and Scott Fellows will do the duties.

A sad note, Pearl Davis, family of Rotary, announced that Cheryl Covington, Dal Covington’s wife, has contracted “the Big C.” Further details when they become available.

Nancy also reminded us that on April 6th the district will sponsor a Rotary Day of Service.  In addition, that evening a “winners” thank you party will be held at the Weigel’s home. The Blue Chip Team won top honors.
April 10th luncheon will be dark with an evening social get-together meeting instead.  Starting at 6 p.m., the guest speaker will be Jeanne Peters, R.D. who will discuss her passion for backyard gardening. Members and spouses are encouraged to attend.

The District 5280 Annual Conference is coming up, scheduled for May 2-5 at the Fess Parker Ranch in Santa Barbara.  Signup now and get a nightly room rate of $179.00 that will go up to $459.00 for stays May 6th onward.

The Rotary Club of Redondo Beach and the Molina Foundation will deliver books to Fry Elementary in Wilmington on May 9th.  Contact Terry Bichlmeier if you are interested.

Lastly, Nancy announced the District Assembly is scheduled for May 18th at the Community Center in Carson. All members are invited.
