Terry Bichlmeier gave a brief overview of the recent Molina Foundation gala luncheon.  “The previous week the Foundation delivered 450,000 books to children in the Los Angeles region, He said.  He noted numerous dignitaries and major organizations attended.

Program:  Captain Leon Nixon gave an overview of the Port of Los Angeles and some of the project currently underway.  “We are a business and have to maintain our credit rating,” he said.
Driving change at the port is the development of larger container ships worldwide.  The port recently completed dredging its main channel to a depth of 53 feet to accommodate the larger container ships, which are expected to begin arriving in 2014-15. In a recent month, April, more than 200,000 contains were imported through the port while 160,000 were exported.  “We handle about 5,000 containers daily and that will increase to about 13,000 daily with the larger ships,” he said.

To handle the increasing traffic the port is building a new intermodal rail terminal.  It will allow more containers to ship elsewhere in the country via rail quicker instead of transiting to a rail yard about 10 miles up the Long Beach Freeway, first by truck and then by rail.

The port covers 6.1 square miles.  The agency Nixon works for, the Port of Los Angeles Police Department employs 128 officers, 49 civilians, and several dog patrols.
