A depition of the Coker Drum transiting PCH

Jeff Wilson, Senior Representative Policy, Government and Public Affairs for Chevron gave a highly interesting presentation about Chevron’s Coker Drum Reliability Project. In case you do not know what a “coker” is, Jeff explained it is a vital machine to all southern California drivers.  That’s because 25% of all automobile fuel and 40% of all jet fuel used at LAX is manufactured by Chevron in El Segundo.

“A coker is a huge round drum that is 100 long, 30 feet in diameter and weighs about 100 tons.  We are bringing six of them through Redondo Beach to our El Segundo facility,” said Wilson.  “The cokers were manufactured in Spain because there is no steel company left in the U.S. with the capability to manufacture such a large unit.”

The first two drums are expected to arrive February 18th on a barge that will dock near the Redondo Beach Marina.  Altogether six coker drums will arrive. The units will travel by flatbed truck to Chevron’s El Segundo refinery. “The move will take place at night to minimize traffic disruptions.  We worked with city governments along the route detailing the trip,” he said.  “The flatbed has 136 tires, 36 axles and is 240 feet long tip to tail. It will travel 2-3 miles per hours on PCH.

Wilson said the new coker drums will replace units that were manufactured in 1968.  “We expect 50 to 60 years use for these new drums,” he said.
