(REDONDO BEACH) Club President Nancy Campbell announced our club has an annual budget of $68,000 but that we have outstanding invoices of $11,000.

Birthdays: John Parsons, Nasrin Moghadasian, Ernie O’Dell and Ted Wendorff.

Casino Night:  Laura Fields filled in for Karen today.  She urged ticket sales, sponsorships and donations for the Silent Auction. Today was the last day for discount admission price for the March 16th event.

Announcements: March 9, 2013 will be a busy day for Rotarians.  Three events are scheduled for that day. First, LMU will host the District 5280 Art, speech, and music and dance competitions.  Our club is hosting a dance company and we need volunteers to attend.  See Bill Gard if you are interested. The Rotary Community Alliance is offering a tour of Camp Pendleton.  Rotarians will travel by motorcoach.  See PDG Chuck Anderson. He urged that we donate “gently used baby items” but not diapers, as they are too bulky. Meanwhile, also on March 9th (a busy Rotary Day!) the Ethics Leadership Enterprise Seminar will be held at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel in San Jose.  See Nancy Campbell if you are interested.  Cost is $95.00 per person.

Our luncheon speaker this week was back for an encore.  Sami Freeman is an Ambassadorial Scholar who spoke to us about a year-and-a-half ago before leaving on her scholarship.  Today she reported on her experience.

Sami went to Vancouver, BC where she studied music therapy. A songwriter, guitarist and pianist, Sami worked with several Alzheimer patients providing music and giving them hope.  “I had to learn types of music and specific songs for them,” she said.  During her time in Vancouver, she took a month off from providing music therapy to write and produce two children’s albums, worked on a CD of her performances, and was heard on radio.

“I always thought I had wings to fly but didn’t know how to flap until Vancouver.  There I learned that now I was a songwriter,” she said. “I learned consistency and showing up and to keep gratitude in mind. I’m grateful for being a part of this great Rotary organization.”

Our speaker next week will be club member Connie Siegel who will talk about Bernie Maadof.

Raffle:  Bill Gard tried for the green marble and $127 in the kitty.   Alas, he took home the consolation prize: $10.00.
