Our luncheon program today focused on scholarships.  We awarded five $1,000.00 scholarships to graduating Redondo Union High School seniors.  The scholarships were funded by the club’s Community Foundation.

Redondo Union High School Principal Nikki Wesley provided an insight into how she attempts to prepare her students for post-high school life.  “There are three key things I want them to learn,” she said.  “First, to stand up for themselves, second to develop the ability to cope with life challenges, and third to be significant as a person in life.”

When the scholarships were awarded, each student was asked to describe one activity that they were involved in during their high school years that they believe influenced their future choices.

Ansari Moiz volunteered at Little Company of Mary Hospital and plan to attend University of California  San Diego with a major in biology;

Arthur Fontana told us he volunteered at the Marine Museum, earned by Eagle Scout badge, and plans to attend Cal State University Channel Islands with a major in business.

Sarah Logan is the daughter of Rotarian Dr. Bruce Logan.  She worked in the athletic trainers office every 6th period and is co-president of the Rotary Interact Club at RUHS.  Sarah will be attending the University of Hawaii on a water polo scholarship and plans to major in physical therapy with a minor in mathematics.

Courtney Meyers volunteered at various city schools.  She plans to attend the University of Oregon  and major in business administration and marketing.

Sarah Volpe volunteered at the YMCA and worked with special needs children at YMCA Summer Camp.  She was also active in the Community Support Program.  She plans to attend the Cal State University Channel Island where she will study to become a special education teacher and work with special needs children.

(REDONDO BEACH) April 20, 2013 – We had a big crowd at lunch today.  Probably due to the fact that our club awarded scholarships to five Redondo Union High School students. Proud moms and friends came to bask in the accomplishments of their children.  Indeed, those accomplishments were impressive as readers see above.

Our greeter today was Jim Sharvin,  Rolando Andrade led us in the flag salute, and Chantel King provided the invocation.  By the way, Chantel has been accepted into the year-long Leadership Redondo Program.

Visitors:  Jeff Melodia, guest of Michael Jackson, Julia Cullinan, Vicki Radel's niece, Dawn Essen, guest of Wayne Bradshaw, Odila Goncalves, wife of Rotarian Marcelo Goncalves, Nicole Wesley, principal of Redondo Union High School, and scholarship winners Moiz Ansari, Sarah Volpe, Courtney Meyer, Arthur Fontana and Sarah Logan.  Also Tim O’Dell, Ernie’s son, Shauna Fontana, Laurie Meyer, Barbara Faver, John Ibrahim and Yasmin Ansari.

Meals-on-Wheels:  Galina Gilman and Karina Garcia handled this weekly assignment today.  Next week: Jim Sharvin and Chuck Anderson, PDG.

Birthday:  We acknowledged one B-day today – Pearl Davis.  Unfortunately she couldn’t be present.  Happy Birthday Pearl.  (Remember, another birthdays is always better than the alternative!)

Formula 101 Race Master Extraordinaire Scott Fellows announced that our go-kart racing team placed third in the recent annual Rotary Go-Kart race.  Way to go Scott, Jim Chen, Ernie O’Dell and Ernie's son Tim O’Dell.

Grants, Fines and other Nonsuch

President Nancy Campbell
announced the club has received a $17,000 matching grant for the club’s international project in Taveuni, and island in far-away Fiji. Karen Weigel, who heads this project with her husband Jeff, worked with 17 villagers on Taveuni to create clean-water projects in 17 villages.

Happy Fines:  In our club, anyone who wants to make an announcement about any of their accomplishments is encouraged, for a minimum of $5.00, to stand-up and belt out.  Three members did so:  Jean Scully ($10.00) announced the recent birth of her first grandchild, Rick Mendoza, PDG, announced ($5.00) he has completed 1,000 miles of walking around the Trump Golf Course near his home. Quite an accomplishment for a guy who was paralyzed and in hospital seven years ago with a nerve disorder.  Way to go, Rick! And Terry Bichlmeier bragged about his 16-year-old daughter Amy who  is continuing her unbroken streak of straight A’s at Redondo Union High School AND is simultaneously taking three AP classes. Wow, go Amy!
