The Rotary Club of Redondo Beach sponsors the education of Sathie Khatun from the village of Khulna, Bangladesh, through the Amarok Society with a $1,000 donation annually.  The Amarok Society is a Canadian-based charity working to "defeat ignorance with the most powerful force know to man: Woman." It is active in Bangladesh, Nigeria and elsewhere in Third World countries. From its website it explains, "Amarok Society teaches uneducated mothers how to read and write, and then teaches the mothers to be neighbourhood teachers - educating their own and and their neighbours' children every day in their homes with astonishing results."

Dear members of Redondo Beach Rotary Club,

I hope you are well by the grace of God. You know that Bangladesh is an agricultural country and our livelihood depends on agriculture production and agriculture depends on mainly rainwater. This is monsoon in our country rain is good for the farmers. But people who live in slums in city area, monsoon is not good for them because of uncertain daily basis work opportunity. In slum people live in tin-shed shelter during heavy rainfall rainwater enters into the slum house from the roof, sometimes rain starts in the morning and continues the whole day, so daily labors do not find work for the day. In this season constriction work and other works become slow down. In our school our teacher facilitated a session on – “Savings for crisis days”. After that he started to save little money for our daily income. If we don’t find work we could use that money to buy foods. Sometimes mothers take short-term loan from each other to survive, as we are friends. However there are still problems for the families who have more children to feed but income is less. They could not do savings and are forced to go to the moneylenders or money-lending agency for loan by paying interest of their money.

In earlier days slum children were running, playing and walking here & there all the day. Their parents did not care about education. But the scenario has been changed in our slum. If you come to our slum you could see in the   morning or evening time children reading books and preparing lessons. Mothers are now aware about education of their loving children. 25 Amarok mothers are teaching about 125 children including their own children. I also teach 5 neighbor children. Whatever we learn from our mother school we teach to the children. We teach them through picture, drawing, song and games. In every month Amarok teacher visits our house to see how we are doing. This is not always easy for us to maintain the timetable and schedule but we inform our children if the schedule is changed. We do this because we want to create a future educated generation.

24 new books have arrived in our school library and most of them are for young children. These are storybooks, biography of successful people from the poorest family and about the successful women in Bangladesh. Now we encourage all people of our community to come and take books from our library. We want to develop our library as ‘community library’ as we know as much as people will read they could know many things and will change their attitude and behavior. Our teacher says in your country people read books whenever they get time like during travel and sitting in a bus stop waiting for bus. But in our country people do not like to read. Please like to spend time on gossiping or chatting with each other not reading books. It is important to change this but we do not know how to do that largely in our country. We are trying in our community through our library and sometimes share about a book, which is read with the women who do not come here. They like to listen; we hope such way change will come.

I can give you news in advance that Amarok School is going to arrange a skill based tailoring training to a group of 10 mothers of 3 Amarok Schools. I showed my interest to participate there and have selected as I have some skill on sewing by hands. I will tell you later about my progress on tailoring.

Thank you for your kind support to my education.

With love,
Sathie
