Walk the Ridge: Promoting Civility Within Our Differences
Aug 08, 2018
While a career as a marketing representative at IBM and an office manager for a chiropractic clinic helped ‘pay the bills’, Nellie has been a ‘wantrepreneur’ for over 25 years and keeps an active log of business ideas of which some are pursued; others reserved ‘for a later date’. While living in Virginia she established a home-based cupcake business named, ‘Sweet Nellies’, that expanded into cookies and cakes. Currently Nellie is working on what she hopes will be her most gratifying accomplishment, Walk the Ridge, which is a social movement to restore civility and tolerance among people of different opinions and ideologies. This ‘business with a purpose’ has become her life mission and she is taking the message across the country to promote individuals building Circles of Civility in order to realize a kinder more civil nation. Nellie is and always has been an active volunteer in the communities in which she has resided. While living in Manhattan Beach she has been involved as a program manager for the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, Leadership Manhattan Beach, Special Olympics, Mira Costa PTSA, Mira Costa Bands, and is on the board of the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair, among other causes. Nellie was born and raised in St. Louis, Mo and has lived in 8 different cities before coming to the beautiful city of Manhattan Beach, three years ago. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, running, biking and exploring beautiful SoCal. You can learn more about the Walk the Ridge movement by going to https://walktheridge.org

Dear Fellow Rotarians, The Rise Against Hunger event is primarily centered around packaging meals to ship off to 3rd-world countries.
Rise Against Hunger events take place all around the USA, and based on the geographic location of your event, the meals will be shipped to the nearest developing country in need of our assistance. In our case, they will be shipped to Southeast Asia.
Back in February, we packaged 25,000 meals. It was a fun, energetic atmosphere of about 100 volunteers forming assembly lines to package meals while listening to music and socializing. The volunteer jobs range from pouring the foods in bins for individual meal packaging, creating the individual meal bags, sealing the bags, putting labels on the bags, and packing them in boxes. To keep things interesting, we change job duties throughout the event.
For more information about this endeavor please visit - https://www.riseagainsthunger.org
We will circulate a sigh-up sheet at the next several weekly lunch meetings. This is a great event, and I hope to see many of you there.
Best Regards, Michael |
