(REDONDO BEACH)  May 5, 2013 – At today’s luncheon our club granted a community service award and two honorary memberships to long-time community leaders. PDG Vicki Radel mcee'd the awards.

Pat Dreizler was honored for her long service to the city of Redondo Beach.  She is the mother of Gayle Albin-Bailey, a past-president of the Redondo Beach Rotary Club.

Bob Meistrell, co-founder of Body Glove, a local business. was recognized  with an honorary Rotary membership.  Meistrell, previously recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow, has served the community of Redondo Beach for six decades.  He is an educator, innovator and leader in the community and is known locally as “Mr. Redondo Beach.”

The second honorary membership was awarded to long-time Rotarian Chat Campbell for his 40 years of service to Rotary.  Chat started in Rotary more than five decades ago when he helped found the South Modesto Rotary Club in 1959.  Years later when he moved to southern  California, he  joined the Lakewood Rotary Club and then the Wilshire Rotary Club.  In 1999, he joined the Redondo Beach Rotary Club when the two Redondo Beach clubs combined.  Chat provides public relations and advertising services to the club.

Following two weeks advance notice, incoming president Karen Weigel discussed the pending lunch cost increase at the Bluewater Grill that are scheduled to kick in July 1st.  Since  club dues are embedded in the club bylaws an affirmative vote  would also require a bylaws change.   Members were given a ballot and asked to vote on the pending increase.   When the vote was counted, members approved increasing the meal cost to $25 and voted to raise our weekly facility fees to $8. A vote on the bylaws was taken too and it was amended to reflect the new dues fees.

Laura Fields said she would order “Rotarian at Work” Tee shirts.  She passed around a sign up sheet for anyone wishing to order the shirt.  Cost $10.

Terry Bichlmeier introduced the club’s new literacy program, “Book Buddies”.   The club will work with the Molina Foundation to distribute 20,000 books locally.  Book Buddies will involve reading at the elementary level.

Scott Fellows announced that his catering company, Critic’s Choice Catering, would host an open house on June 26th.  The event will be co-sponsored by the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce and Vini’s  Party Rentals, and will feature complimentary food and entertainment.  “Plus we are offering a complimentary bar,” said Fellows.  Event location: 2806 Phelan Lane, Redondo Beach 90278.  RSVP by 310-545-1144.

Michael Jackson handled Meals-on-Wheels today; next week Mark Smith and Vicki Radel will provide service.

Raffle: Larry Hashimoto tried for the jackpot of $300, but alas, he only took home $10.

Our speaker next week will be Seth Stoddard, a USC professor of law specializing in Homeland Security. See you then!
