Cherise Charleswell joined Journey Out in September 2016 as Development & Outreach Director. Cherise has a multidisciplinary education, having undergraduate degrees in the Biological Sciences and Anthropology, as well as a Master’s in Public Health. She is the Immediate Past President of the Southern California Public Health Association (SCPHA), the Co-Chair of the Programs Committee of the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Women’s Caucus, and has held various leadership position within APHA. Her research, work, and advocacy has traditionally focused on health inequity, women, racial/ethnic minorities; and how social determinants of health in the built environment impacts their health outcomes, quality of life, and life expectancy.

Operating since 1980, Journey Out is a non-governmental and non-profit health and human services agency. Our mission is "to help victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking leave a life of abuse and violence, overcome their fears, and empower them to reach their full potential and achieve their goals".

Wayne Spencer is the President of Spencer4hire Security Guards, which has been in business over 35 years. He is a former Police Commissioner in the City of Inglewood, a Past-President of the Rotary Club of Inglewood and Past-District 5280 Sergeant At Arms (under 4 Governor's). He is also a former member of The Jamaica Cycling Team and was the New Bicycle Racing Association Track Champion in 1972 and 1973.

Wayne will tell Security Stories that will demonstrate some of the life skills Rotary gave him, speak about international travel security, and provide a handout checklist of travel does and dont's.

Dr Timothy Horeczko received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Comparative Literature from U.C. Berkley (he speaks Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian and Ukrainian) before attending medical school at U.C. Davis. He then performed a residency in Emergency Medicine and a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and has a Master of Science in Clinical Research degree from UCLA. 

Timothy is now a faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA and an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He has received several teaching awards, performs clinical research aimed at improving emergency medical care for children, and has a popular podcast that shares recent advances in pediatric emergency care with emergency physicians in the U.S. and around the world. 

Timothy will share lessons he has learned -- not as a physician, but as a dedicated family member just trying to help navigate what can be an overwhelming, monolithic health care system.

A teacher by nature, Jimmy Green is an entertaining and dynamic speaker with over 20 years combined teaching, coaching, keynote speaking and facilitating workshops on success conditioning in the areas of health, sales and innovation management. With a BA from UCLA in Economics, he spent over 11 years teaching Economics, Personal Finance and Math in Los Angeles public schools. Where, he learned a few things about keeping an audience engaged. (If you can keep the focus of 40 7th graders, you can teach anyone…) When he’s not funding mortgages or teaching, he loves to meditate, volunteer, travel and torture his kids with his “life lessons.”

 

Jimmy will provide an entertaining, inspirational and memorable story about overcoming obstacles and what he learned on an adventure carrying out his father’s last wish.

Michael Scott Moore is a journalist and a novelist, author of a comic novel set in a fictional California surf town, Too Much of Nothing, as well as a travel book about surfing, Sweetness and Blood, which was named a best book of 2010 by The Economist and Popmatters. He covered the 2011 trial of ten Somali pirates in Europe for Spiegel Online, then traveled to Somalia in early 2012 to research a book. He was kidnapped and held hostage for two and a half years.

He grew up in Redondo Beach and graduated from Mira Costa High School. His memoir about Somalia is due out from HarperCollins in mid-2018.

He’s covered the European migration crisis for Businessweek, and politics, travel, and literature for The Atlantic, Der Spiegel, The New Republic, Pacific Standard, The New York Times, The L.A. Times, The Daily Beast, and The L.A. Review of Books. He has received fellowships or grants from Fulbright, The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, and the Carey Institute for the Global Good.

Michael will talk about what it took to survive as a pirate hostage, centered on classical Stoicism.

Mike Peterson grew up in coastal Florida and California where he developed a fascination for the ocean world at an early age. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with an emphasis in Marine Biology before going to medical school at UC San Diego and then performing a residency in Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Mike is now Vice Chair for Clinical Operations for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor and a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Mike has been a scuba diver and sailor for many years, and can often be found on his boat ChriSea. One of his areas of expertise is injuries encountered in the marine environment.

Jim Mellert was born in Honolulu while his father was a Navy dentist stationed at the submarine base at Pearl Harbor.  He grew up in the South Bay enjoying body surfing and fishing at the Redondo Beach Pier and Redondo Barge.  He graduated from Rolling Hills High School where he played on the tennis team for 4 years. 

He graduated magna cum laude with distinction from Point Loma College with a B.A. in Biology.  He then attended the USC School of Dentistry where he graduated with honors in pediatric dentistry and received the Gold Foil Operator’s Award. 

In 1982 he opened his dental practice in Torrance and this year celebrated his 35th year. His practice emphasis is cosmetic reconstructive dentistry including periodontal surgery and dental implants. Jim feels a sense of accomplishment when he is able to help a patient reduce their dental anxiety. He was awarded the Mastership from the Academy of General Dentistry and Fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Jim is a third generation dentist and his daughter, Jamie, is a fourth generation dentist.  All four Mellert dentists are graduates of USC.

Jim is married to his wife Kathy and they have a blended family of six children. He plays tennis every weekday morning. He was a member of Torrance Rotary from 1986-2002.

Sue Johnson was born in Cleveland, Ohio.  She got her BA from Wittenberg University and Masters degree from Kent State University.  She moved to Manhattan Beach, California in 1996 when she got married.

While in Cleveland, she taught Junior High and Middle School Mathematics for 25 years.  She received Math Teacher of the year award from both the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  

Sue loved to use her mathematics skills in helping with scoring and statistics for various sporting events.  She started working professional golf tournaments in 1973 and started travelling to help with scoring on the Champions Tour in 1989. 

Sue Johnson has been involved with helping with professional golf tournaments since 1973.  She started travelling for PGA tournaments starting in 1989.  In 1996, Sue started working with the USGA at the US Open Championships, running Scoring Central.

Sue has already spoken about how the scoring at championships is done.  She will relate some of the behind the scenes stories about the 2017 US Opens.
